My Library Teen Advisory Board took a great interest in this project. "Getting to organize the books into genre is like Christmas!" The enthusiasm I received from the students made me feel encouraged that they were going to love the new organization of the library. The book talks and conversations that the students had about books during the process was amazing! (see video below)
The process was pretty simple. I selected the genres for the fiction section:
-Dystopian Fiction
-Adventure Fiction
Fantasy/Paranormal
Fantasy/General
Fantasy/Science Fiction
Horror Fiction
Historical Fiction
Mystery and Suspense
Romance and Relationships
Realistic Fiction
Inspirational Fiction
General Fiction (anything that didn't fit into the above categories)
Then the process began of pulling all the books from the shelves and putting them into categories. I then color-coded all the books using labels from demco. http://www.demco.com/goto?PRD12803450
I also scanned each section and changed the marc record to the new genre, so that the books would be searchable in the database.

I had a student create signs on "fathead" material to hang above each genre section. The signs look so awesome! One of the really cool things that happened when moving the books to genre sections is how cool the books look on the shelf. All of the Romance/Relationship books are bright, cheery colors, and the fantasy books have black and dark covers. I can't believe I waited so long to ditch Dewey (sorry Dewey)!
